Hike / Nature walk· Brackenhurst, Tigoni
Brackenhurst
A restored indigenous forest and botanical gardens on the edge of Tigoni - gentle walking loops, birdsong and some of Kenya's oldest trees.
Since 2001, Brackenhurst has turned old eucalyptus plots back into indigenous forest - and the result is one of the most peaceful walks near Nairobi. Manicured gardens give way to shaded forest trails thick with birdsong.
It's an easy, family-friendly day: wander the loops, cycle the lanes, then refuel at the Muna Tree Café with farm-sourced food and a monthly farmers' market.
What to do
- ◆Forest walking loops
A 1 km stroll or a longer 2.5 km loop through indigenous forest.
- ◆Cycling the gardens
Easy, flat lanes through the grounds.
- ◆Birdwatching
Restored forest means plenty of birdlife.
- ◆Muna Tree Café
Farm-to-table meals and a monthly farmers' market.
What to bring
- Walking shoes
- Light jacket
- Water
- Camera
Good to know
- •Cooler and often mistier than Nairobi - bring a layer even on a sunny day.
- •Great for kids; the loops are gentle and mostly flat.
